Why Won't My Wooden Wick Stay Lit? (Fixes That Actually Work)

you light the candle. it flickers bravely for ninety seconds. it dies like a soap opera character. you relight it. repeat. before you write an angry review of physics itself — this is the most fixable problem in candles, and it's almost always one of four things.

1. the wick is too long (most likely)

wooden wicks want to be short — about 1/8 inch, roughly two stacked quarters. long wicks can't pull wax up to the flame, so the flame starves and quits. pinch off the charred top with your fingers or nail clippers, then relight. this solves the majority of cases on the spot.

2. the light was too quick

a wooden wick isn't a birthday candle — it needs a real light. hold the flame to one corner and let it travel across the wick's edge, tilting the candle so the flame kisses the wood for a few seconds. you're lighting a tiny plank, not a fuse. give it a proper handshake.

3. the wax pool is drowning it

if the melted wax gets deep and the wick is short, the pool can swamp the flame. blow it out, let it firm up for a few minutes, tip out (or soak up with a paper towel) a little excess wax near the wick, trim any soggy char, relight.

4. the memory ring is haunting you

if past burns were short, the candle tunnels, the walls shade the flame, and airflow dies. fix the tunnel (foil dome trick, 30-45 minutes) and the wick usually behaves after. full instructions in our tunneling guide.
