Do Candles Expire? The Honest Shelf-Life Guide

short answer: a candle won't "go bad" in any way that matters to your safety. long answer: yes, a candle is quietly aging on your shelf, and the thing that fades first is the exact thing you paid for — the scent.

what actually degrades

fragrance oils are volatile by design (that's literally why you can smell them). over months and years, the brightest molecules — citrus, fresh herbs, delicate florals — evaporate and oxidize first. woods, resins, vanilla, and musk hang on much longer. a five-year-old candle usually still smells like something, just a flatter, quieter version of its former self. uv light also bleaches natural wax, which is cosmetic but sad.

the realistic timeline for soy

a well-made soy blend candle holds close to full strength for about 12–18 months, stays solidly enjoyable to around 2 years, and drifts downhill gracefully after. nothing dangerous happens — it just becomes a nostalgia object with a wick.

how to store them right

cool, dark, lid on. that's the whole religion. the lid matters more than people think — it traps the volatiles that would otherwise perfume the inside of your closet instead of your living room. keep tins away from sunny windowsills and hot garages (soy softens around 120°F, and a michigan attic in july laughs at that number).

the real advice

candles are not a retirement asset. they don't appreciate. if you're "saving" a favorite for a special occasion, please know the special occasion is tuesday. burn the good candle. we'll make you another one — that's the entire point of us.
