Candle Care

treat it right, it burns beautifully to the last.

three short chapters. graduate in five minutes. your candles will thank you for the rest of their lives.

01 before you light

trim the wick. every time.

snap the charred tip of the wooden wick down to about ¼ inch — fingers work, takes two seconds. this is the single biggest thing you can do for a clean, strong, even burn.

pick the spot

a heat-resistant surface (the tin gets properly hot — use a dish or coaster on wood and marble), away from drafts, fans, vents, and open windows. still air = even burn.

02 while it burns

the first burn is sacred

let the wax melt edge to edge before you snuff it — about 2–3 hours. wax has a memory, and this one burn decides whether your candle tunnels forever or burns flat and gorgeous.

four hours, max

once the melt pool hits the edges, the scent fully opens up. after four hours, give it a rest — let it cool and set completely before round two.

snuff, don't blow

use a snuffer — blowing splashes wax, sends smoke through the room, and knocks the wick off-center. dramatic exits are for main characters, not flames.

03 between burns

recenter the wick

while the wax is still soft, nudge the wick back to center with a toothpick. a centered wick means an even melt pool next time.

lid on, cool dark spot

the lid locks in fragrance and keeps dust off. sunlight yellows soy wax and fades scent — a shelf out of the sun keeps it true.

retire it at ½ inch

when half an inch of wax remains, that's the finish line — burning lower overheats the tin. the good news: the tin's next life is about to begin.

the freezer trick ✦

pop the finished tin in the freezer for a few hours — the leftover wax shrinks and pops right out. wash with warm soapy water and boom: planter, brush cup, jewelry dish, tiny treasure chest.

wooden wick 101

01 trim before every burn — snap the charred tip off with your fingers. biggest difference, smallest effort.
02 tilt your lighter and run the flame across the full width of the wick for 3–5 seconds. let it come to you.
03 low or flickering flame? the wick wants to be shorter. cool, trim, relight.
04 the crackle is the feature. wooden wicks throw scent wider than cotton — they just like a little attention.

the serious bit

we joke about a lot. not this.

  • never leave a burning candle unattended, or near kids and pets.
  • burn on a heat-resistant surface, away from anything flammable.
  • keep clear of drafts and vents for a clean, even flame.
  • the tin stays hot after snuffing — hands off until it cools.
