Candle Care

Candle Care

Follow these steps every time you light a melt. candle and it will burn beautifully from first light to last.

Trim the wick

Before every single burn, snap off the charred tip of your wooden wick down to ¼ inch — you can do this with your fingers in two seconds. A trimmed wick burns cleaner, stronger, and more evenly. This is the single most important thing you can do to get the most out of your candle.

Light the candle

Tilt your lighter and slowly run the flame across the full width of the wooden wick — hold it there for 3 to 5 seconds. Wooden wicks need a moment to catch, so don't rush it. If it doesn't take the first time, let it cool, snap off a little more of the tip, and try again.

First burn

On your very first use, let the candle burn until the entire top layer of wax has fully melted edge to edge — this takes about 2 to 3 hours. This creates the wax memory and prevents tunneling on every burn after. Skipping this step is the most common reason candles waste wax down the middle.

Coax out the scent

Once the melt pool reaches the edges, the fragrance really opens up and fills the room. Burn for a maximum of 4 hours at a time — after that, let the candle cool and solidify completely before relighting. Burning too long can cause the wick to drift and the wax to overheat.

Snuff out the flame

Always use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame — never blow it out. Blowing can splash hot wax, send a smoke trail through your space, and knock the wick off-center. After snuffing, gently recenter the wick while the wax is still soft so it's ready for next time.

Store properly

Always replace the lid after each burn to lock in the fragrance and keep dust off the wax. Store away from direct sunlight and heat, which can discolor the wax and fade the scent over time. Between uses, a cool dark spot is all it needs.

Re-center the wick

After every burn, while the wax is still warm and liquid, gently nudge the wick back to the center with your finger or a toothpick. A centered wick ensures an even melt pool next time and prevents the flame from burning too close to the tin wall.

Avoid drafts

Never burn your candle near open windows, fans, vents, or air conditioning. Drafts cause the flame to flicker unevenly, which leads to uneven wax burn and excess soot on the wick. Find a still, sheltered spot for the best and cleanest burn every time.

Know when to stop

Stop burning your candle when ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning below this point can cause the tin to overheat and may damage the surface it's resting on. The good news — the tin is fully recyclable once it cools.

Protect your surfaces

Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface or a protective coaster — especially on wood, marble, or painted finishes. The tin gets very hot during a burn and will leave a ring on unprotected surfaces. A simple ceramic dish or candle plate does the trick perfectly.

Keep out of sunlight

Direct sunlight and UV exposure cause soy wax to yellow and can fade or alter the fragrance over time. If you're not burning your candle for an extended period, store it in a cool, dark place with the lid on. The cooler the storage, the longer the scent stays true.

Repurpose the tin

Once your candle is done, place the tin in the freezer for a few hours — the remaining wax will contract and pop right out. Wipe clean with warm soapy water and you've got a beautiful little tin ready to use as a planter, catch-all, jewelry dish, or whatever you dream up.

Your wooden wick

  • 01Trim before every single burn — snap the charred tip off with your fingers. This one step makes the biggest difference.
  • 02Tilt your lighter and hold it across the full width of the wick for 3–5 seconds. Let it come to you.
  • 03Low or flickering flame? The wick needs to be shorter — let it cool, trim again, relight.
  • 04Wooden wicks crackle softly and throw scent wider than cotton. They just need a little more care to burn their best.

Safety

Never leave a burning candle unattended or near children or pets.
Burn on a heat-resistant surface, away from flammable materials.
Keep away from drafts and vents to ensure even burning.
The tin will be hot during and after use — do not touch until cooled.
Stop burning when ½ inch of wax remains to prevent overheating.
Do not burn for more than 4 consecutive hours at a time.
