every few months an article makes the rounds claiming candles are tiny smokestacks, and every few months the fragrance-loving internet spirals. as people who literally sell candles, we have an obvious bias — so instead of vibes, let's talk about what the research actually says.
the honest summary
burning anything produces combustion byproducts. the peer-reviewed work on candles — including a widely cited 2014 study in regulatory toxicology and pharmacology — has consistently found that under normal use conditions, emissions from well-made candles sit far below indoor air quality limits. the doses are small, and dose is the entire game in toxicology. a candle is not a diesel engine; it's closer to cooking dinner, which you presumably still do.
what actually matters
the wick: lead-core wicks were the historical villain — banned in the US since 2003. wooden wicks (ours) and modern cotton never had the problem. the soot: a flickering, too-long wick produces visible soot; a trimmed one barely any — care matters more than chemistry (our safety guide covers it). the wax: clean-burning soy blends like ours produce less soot than cheap paraffin at equal wick discipline. the fragrance: we use phthalate-free oils — the ingredient class critics most reasonably flag.
practical peace of mind
trim the wick, don't burn 12 hours straight, crack a window occasionally like you would while cooking. if you have asthma or a sensitive nose, start with lighter scent loads and shorter burns. that's it. that's the whole protocol.
